Many wind up asking, ?What does this intend to me The Native American Church went to the Indians during their breaking point. In the expressions of an individual from the NAC, Mary Crow Dog, ?The Native American Church turned into the religion of the least fortunate of poor people, the vanquished, the raided. Peyote caused them to comprehend what was going on and caused them to persevere. It was the main thing that invigorated them in those, our darkest days.? Clearly an aggressor religion couldn't have made due under white predominance. The development of this religion was a reaction to the debased status on Native Americans. It's objective interior harmony and congruity as opposed to rivalry. This thought was exceptionally applicable to the financial circumstance that these indigenous individuals were being confronted with. For some, this was actually what they expected to forge ahead. Since the start, there has been solid resistance to the Native American Church by a few gatherings. Today, Im tackling the short essay. Like the personal statement, the short essay question has changed this year (as it does every year), so its understandable why applicants might be stumped. Short Essay (Essay 2): What one policy (national or local) would you create or change and why? (200 words maximum) In general, be specific with your response. Briefly explain to the Admissions Committee what the policy is, how it affects the community and why you would want to change it. While the prompt doesnt ask you how you would change it, it can show us your resourcefulness if youre able to succinctly address the policy from every angle. Keep in mind you have a limited amount of space, so be strategic in what you write. If youre telling us how you would change a policy, you should also be somewhat detailed in what your recommendations would be. For example, Five percent of college students have homesickness so severe that it causes symptoms of anxiety and depression. To combat this issue at my alma mater, I would like to create a policy at Columbia University that allows the Center for Student Wellness on the Morningside Heights campus to regularly host human-animal interactions (aka interactions with therapy dogs). Why pet therapy to help students cope with homesickness? The Journal of Creativity in Mental Health reports that spending time with a therapy animal resulted in decreases in self-reported anxiety and loneliness in college students, according to the Columbia University Medical Center. While the International Journal of Stress Management reports that simply petting a dog during study breaks reduces student anxiety and sadness. Thus, by creating a safe space for students to connect with one another, while interacting with trained service animals, theyll be healthier individuals who are able to dispel their frustrations without hurting someone else or negatively impacting their academic performance. To achieve this, I would establish relationships with therapy organizations, coordinate with Columbias health services staff to schedule the sessions and ensure liability coverage, and connect with student affairs and press departments to promote the sessions on a routine basis. (Can you tell I have a thing for animals?) While this isnt a fool-proof formula for writing your essay question, I wanted to show you how I personally answered it in a limited time frame. (1.) I started by describing the problem, (2.) I stated a potential solution, (3.) I explained why the solution is valid, (4.) I described how I would implement the policy. Keep in mind, this is just a first draft (based on 30 minutes of research and writing time). When it comes to writing the next draft, I would definitely focus more on how I would want to implement the policy, or how I would go about creating the change. Your essay format is going to vary wildly from mine, and thats more than fine. (In fact, if someone else on the Admissions Committee were to write this blog post, theirs would vary as well.) Experiment with how the short essay flows, add a statistics or omit them altogether. Ive also read essays that shuffle this order around, so do what works best for what youre trying to write. And yes, as my sample suggests your policy doesnt have to change the world as we know it. Your policy can be as big or small as you can dream up. Have fun with it, shoot for the stars, be impactful, and share with us a policy youd really want to create or change in your community, city, or country. And keep in mind its part of your admission application, so it should be reflective of your application as a whole. I hope this has been helpful. There are those who devote themselves whole-heartedly to God and those who choose the lukewarm approach to Christianity. Regardless, humans are all from God and God is in all of them. Sandburg uses poetic devices such as similes, personification, and imagery to emphasize parts of the poem, which helps him show his love and pride for the city of Chicago. Imagery played a very important part in the poem because it gave the reader an image in there head of the city and the environment with the people who lived there. We will write a custom essay sample on Chicago Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now The main purpose of this poem is to defend the common theories that are directed toward the city of Chicago. Sandburg talks about the corruption of the city, which shows he is honest about what he says, but also points out the flaws of other cities and their people. He also points out that even though Chicago is corrupt and bad on the outside, it still has good people on the inside. In the first stanza Carl Sandburg gives details about the jobs of the city and the things most noticed about it. The first stanza states the name HOG butcher of the world which gives the person an image of a butcher in the city; it also states toolmakers, Stacker of wheat and railroad workers. The details of the city make you think of a stormy, husky, brawling, city with big shoulders. This all means that the city is windy, full of fighters and destruction. Imagery in the poem state that things are very bright and out spoken in the city but even though the city is seen as dark and evil on the outside itââ¬â¢s people are very bright and filled with happiness. Chicagoâ⬠is filled with personification. By the end of the poem, Chicago seems to be way more like a man than like a city. It has shoulders, a heart, a pulse, and it laughs. Sandburg paints a portrait of a city that is, in some ways, very human. Itââ¬â¢s flawed and itââ¬â¢s beautiful, itââ¬â¢s rough and intense. Itââ¬â¢s vibrant and adjustable. It turns out that the best way for Sandburg to comprehend the city is to com pare it to a human being, that way we have a frame of reference for all the beautiful, strong, messiness. Lines 1-5 is the perfect example for a personification. ââ¬Å"Here, the city is described as various types of workers; it is a hog butcher and a toolmaker and so on. The city resembles the very people who live in it. â⬠In the poem ââ¬Å"Chicagoâ⬠Carl Sandburg uses similes to create an idea in the readers mind. For example Sandburg writes,â⬠Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action as a savage pitted against the wilderness. â⬠Here the poet want to compare the city of Chicago to a fierce dog. This really helps the reader imagine Chicago as a wild and crazy city that is ready for action. Sandburg does an excellent job on demonstrating his love and pride for the city of Chicago. The poetic devices not only make the poem a lot more understandable, but also more interesting. The personifications Sandburg uses make the city seem like a man. He also uses great similes to compare Chicago to other places (which is nearly impossible), and imagery to help those who have never been to Chicago understand what Chicago is like. That was not the strangest museum that we have stumbled across, thoughâ⬠¦ If you ever find yourself in Malmo, Sweden, and have an appreciation for the culinary arts, you may want to check out the Disgusting Food Museum. According to this article from HuffPost.com, the museum showcases 80 of the worldââ¬â¢s most disgusting foods. Contrary to what you may think, though, the goal of the museum is not to gross people out. Their mission is actually to challenge peopleââ¬â¢s basic assumptions about food and test the theory that ââ¬Å"disgust is cultural and contextual.â⬠While delicacies such as Chinese mouse wine and maggot infested cheese do not sound exactly appealing to us, we have to admit that the idea of a disgusting foods museum is quite intriguing. And for those who are fans of Franz Kafkaââ¬â¢s literary works (or just interesting museum designs), The Kafka Museum in Prague is sure to be a hit. The museum is full of weird, discombobulating elements, aimed to represent the chaos of Kafkaââ¬â¢s life. Exhibits include a maze made out of filing cabinets, a ââ¬Å"pissing statue,â⬠and 3-D installations, among other things. The museum also features first editions of almost all of Kafkaââ¬â¢s works, correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, photographs, drawings, and studies from literary research. There is, of course, also amuseum shopthat offers Kafkaââ¬â¢s complete works, as well as his biographies. The contrast between outgoing President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his incoming successor, John F. Kennedy, was dramatic and visible. The youngest man ever to be elected president (Kennedy was forty-three) was replacing the oldest man yet to leave the office (Eisenhower was seventy). A Democrat was replacing a Republican. A celebrated World War II combat hero was replacing the celebrated World War II supreme commander. A professional politician who had served three terms in the House of Representatives and less than two terms as the junior senator from Massachusetts was replacing a career military leader whose first and only elective office was the presidency. Most importantly, perhaps, Kennedy's election replaced a defender of caution, prudence, and restraint with an advocate of change and energetic leadership. Kennedy was the type of man that reached out to the audience and showed them that his role as president was the way to bring about change and freedom to the world. adversary during the Cold War: "Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate." But he also pledged that "we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." In the best-remembered phrase of his presidency, Kennedy summoned the idealism of the American people: "ask not what your country can do for youask what you can do for your country." The call was broadly appealing. It "resonated with liberals who shared Kennedy's belief in public service, and with conservatives who were weary of government handouts. In fact, if you have any intention of applying to selective colleges, this process can really begin as early as your freshman year. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll describe all of the tasks you should complete to maximize your chances of getting into the best possible college. Furthermore, Iââ¬â¢ll let you know when you should be completing these tasks so that youââ¬â¢re able to stay on top of the process. Feature image source: Scott Savage/Flickr Overview of the College Application Process The major components of your application that will be evaluated are your transcript, your standardized test scores, your recommendations, your personal essay, and your extracurricular activities. I'll walk you through all the steps you need to take to strengthen each component of your application. If you follow my advice and timeline, you'll make yourself an extremely strong candidate for any college. Read on to learn the specific things you should be doing and when to do them. Take the Right Classes When to start: Before freshman year Colleges will evaluate you based on the classes youââ¬â¢ve taken. The most selective schools want to admit students who have challenged themselves and are willing to push themselves academically. You donââ¬â¢t have to take every single honors and AP course thatââ¬â¢s offered at your school, but if you want to get into a top college, you should be able to demonstrate that you can excel in some of the hardest courses that are available to you. Also, it's best to take the most difficult classes in the subjects related to your academic strengths or your intended major. You should begin thinking about whichclasses totake before your freshman year of high school. In many schools, the math or foreign language class you take during your freshman year will determine what level youââ¬â¢re able to reach when youââ¬â¢re a senior in high school. Spend ample time considering which classes to takeand whether those classes will allow you to pursue your academic interests and reach your college goals. Specifically, consider whichscience, math, history, foreign language, English, elective, and AP classes you should take. Challenging yourself makes you stronger. Get Good Grades When to start: Freshman year I think this is pretty obvious, but your grades matter to colleges. The majority of colleges will focus on your sophomore and junior year grades, but schoolswill also look at your freshman and senior year grades. Also, your high school GPA is typically calculated from your grades from all four years of high school. You should try to maintain the mentality that every semester counts, and do as well as you can each year of high school. For inspiration and useful information, check out our article on how to get a 4.0 GPA and better grades. Excel in Extracurriculars When to start: Freshman year Other than your grades and test scores, your extracurricular activities probably have the biggest influence on the quality of your college application. Colleges, especially the most selective ones, want their students to have exceptional achievements outside of the classroom, and theyââ¬â¢re looking for individuals who use their leisure time to pursue their passions. You should participate in extracurricular activities throughout high school. Colleges prefer to see a sustained commitment to your activities; itââ¬â¢s more impressive to do one activity for four years and continue to show growth in that activity than it is to do four activities for one year each. Some students believe they need to be well-rounded and do a ton of extracurriculars; however, for college admissions, it may be more advantageous for you to develop a ââ¬Å"spikeâ⬠and exhibit excellence in a particular activity or field. Instead of playing every sport, writing for the school newspaper, participating in speech and debate, and joining student government, you may be better served to focus your extracurricularefforts on becoming a superstar field hockey player. Or, if you're passionate about science, you may want to spend your free time creating an award-winning project for science fair or competing in Science Olympiad. If you have multiple interests, it's perfectly acceptable to explore all of them; just keep in mind that you don't have to do every possible extracurricular to get into a great college, and, generally, reaching the highest level in a given activity requires such an incredible time commitment that you won't have time to participate in many other activities outside of school. Learn what to do if youââ¬â¢re struggling to find extracurriculars. Also, when youââ¬â¢re filling out your college applications, know how to write about your extracurriculars. Maybe the marching band is a good extracurricular for you. Image source:Utah Department of Transportation/Flickr Rock Your Standardized Tests When to start: Sophomore year Even though some colleges have minimized the importance of standardized tests in admissions, your standardized test scores are still a crucial component of your application to most colleges. I advise starting your studying for the SAT/ACT during your sophomore year. Also, you may want to take the PSAT or PreACT during your sophomore year to familiarize yourself with standardized tests. To give yourself the best chance of reaching your target score and to decrease your stress level, we recommend first taking your SAT/ACT in the fall of your junior year. If you donââ¬â¢t reach your target score on your first attempt, you can do more studying and retake the test in the spring of your junior year. If you achieve the score youââ¬â¢re hoping for by the end of your junior year, youââ¬â¢ll have more time duringyour senior year to focus on your schoolwork, extracurriculars, and college applications. If youââ¬â¢re still unsatisfied with your score at the end of your junior year, you have more time to study over the summer and retake the test in the fall. Make sure you know when is the last time you can take the SAT/ACT. Your deadline for taking the SAT/ACT is dependent upon the specific schools you apply to and whether or not you apply early. For most schools, for early decision, you have to take the SAT/ACT by October or November of your senior year, and for regular decision, you have to take the SAT/ACT by December of your senior year. However, there are a few colleges that will accept the January SAT or the February ACT. If youââ¬â¢re considering applying to a school that requires SAT Subject Tests, I also recommend taking those by the end of your junior year. Research Colleges When to start: Junior year Before you apply to college, you need to know which colleges to apply to. You can start learning about colleges as early as your freshman year, especially if you want to get an idea of what you need to do to be a competitive applicant, but you should actively research colleges starting in your junior year at the latest. Use college search websites, finders, guidebooks, and ranking lists to help find colleges that would be a good fit for you. You can also use college fairs and tours to gain more exposure to different colleges and get a better idea of what youââ¬â¢re looking for in a school. By the start of your senior year of high school, you should have a list of colleges to apply to. I recommend applying to reach schools, target schools, and at least a couple of safety schools. College Fair fun. Image source:Patrick Giblin/Flickr Get Superb Recommendations When to start: Spring of junior year Recommendations are also an important part of your college applications. Colleges want assessments from others on your abilities as a student and your character. Be aware of what constitutes a good recommendation and how to ask for a letter of recommendation. Itââ¬â¢s best to initially ask teachers to write your recommendations in the spring of your junior year. By asking early, youââ¬â¢ll be able to get your teachers to agree before they become inundated with requests during your senior year, and theyââ¬â¢ll have more time to think about what theyââ¬â¢re going to write. Make sure you know whom to ask to write your letters. At the beginning of your senior year, you can submit formal requests for your recommendation letters. Also, for your reference, check out these recommendation letters that got a student admitted to Harvard and other Ivy League schools. Write Outstanding College Essays When to start: Summer before senior year Writing your college essays is the most challenging and time-consuming part of the actual application process. Learn everything you need to know about the college essay and how to come up with great college essay ideas.I recommend starting to work on your college essays during the summer before your senior year. The absolute latest you'd want to wait isthe beginning of your senior year, as soon as youââ¬â¢ve finalized thelist of colleges youââ¬â¢re applying to. Even though college essays arenââ¬â¢t particularly long, in my experience, they do take much longer than youââ¬â¢d anticipate, and youââ¬â¢re less likely to be able to write good essays if you wait until the last minute to start. Give yourself enough time to have a trusted teacher or counselor proofread your essays. And youââ¬â¢ll also need time to revise them. Obviously, the essays have to be completed before you submit your applications. If youââ¬â¢re applying early, most deadlines are in mid-November. If youââ¬â¢re applying regular decision, most deadlines are around January 1st. Make sure you keep track of deadlines forthe schools youââ¬â¢re applying to because deadlines will vary. For example, the application deadline for University of California schools is November 30th. Final Thoughts and Additional Steps For most students, the steps listed above are the major components of the college application process. However, some of you may have to do extra work depending on your situation and the colleges you apply to. For example, if you're an aspiring college athlete, you may participate in the athletic recruiting process. If you're applying to an art school or program, you may have to make an art portfolio. Also, some colleges recommend or require interviews. If you interview, know what questions to ask and prepare for. For those of you seeking financial aid, youââ¬â¢ll have to go through the financial aid process, and you may want to apply for scholarships. You should find out the status of earlyapplications in mid-December and regular applications by late March. Then, you may find yourself with multiple options and have to face the task ofchoosing a college. While the application process can feel overwhelming and incredibly stressful, you can minimize your stress by having a plan and avoiding procrastination. Donââ¬â¢t worry too much. Regardless of what you do, thereââ¬â¢s no absolute guarantee that youââ¬â¢ll get into the most selective colleges, but if you try hard and follow our advice, youââ¬â¢ll get into a good college and develop the attributes that will enable your future success. The paper is aimed at a detailed discussion of Islamic Banking development and foundations that lay the basis for their banking system. The paper attempts to understand critical aspects of the Islamic banking system and one of its critical schemes of profit and loss sharing mechanism within their lending process. Through an understanding of the PLS structure, the paper comprehends reasons for its unpopularity and reduced acceptance over other modes of finance, despite its evident advantages. The identification of problems also brings forth solution to problems associated with PLS finance. The paper makes recommendations to improve and revive the PLS finance based on such comprehensive analysis. With independence of Muslim community, it has been increasingly felt that modern financial institutions need to come into the Islamic Banking system and run in compliance with the Islamic sensitivity. The first degree of concrete steps towards combining modern day finance with Islam was seen in Egypt through Mit Ghamur project of savings in 1963 (Al-Alwani and El-Ansary, 1998). This project refrained from calling themselves to be Islamic in nature, yet there was an inherent culture of providing financial intermediation, as per teachings of the Islamic community. Dubai Islamic Bank was the first of its kind in commercial modern Islamic Banking and was founded in 1975 (Thomas, 2006). Out of a total of 176 Islamic banks as of 2006 that have been registered with Bankscope, 70% have been reported to be concentrated in Middle East. The remaining is split between South East Asia with 17% and Sub-Saharan Africa with 15% (Al-Hejailan, 2000). Though all these approaches come up with the same value for GDP, the most commonly used method is the expenditure approach. In this equation, consumption and investment represent the amount spent on final goods and services. Meanwhile, the export minus imports in the equation which is often referred to as net exports is a method of adjusting the expenditures on goods produced abroad (imports) and adding back in the products and services not consumed domestically (exports).à where private consumption represents most of households expenditures on food, housing, etc.; where government consumption represents the sum of governments spending on f inal goods and services such as salaries of the public servant, purchase of weapons for the military, etc.; where investment is defined as business investment in the economy, and net exports show the difference between gross exports and gross imports (Gross Domestic Product 2-8). GDP is one of the most popular measurements of wealth in a certain country. As discussed above, GDP measures the amount of production in a certain economy on an annual basis. Since the amount of production is an indication of how much input an economy has and how efficient its technology is in converting these input into final goods and services, it is also a potent indicator of the capacity and capability of an economy. A rise in real GDP indicates a rise in the overall production which also signals more efficiency in the economy in the utilization of its resources. Using another approach, the GDP is also an implication of the amount of wealth in the country as it sums up the expenditures of all the player s in the economy. Viewing it in another way, GDP is an indication of how much money each sector has in the economy to be able to purchase final goods and services. In short, GDP is an indicator of a country's purchasing power as GDP represents the sum of purchases all the economy players make in a year. GDP is therefore argued as one of the indicators of an economy's standard of living as an increase in GDP signifies more goods and services being produced and consumed (GDP and Living Standards 1).à GDP can also be used as an indicator of the problems that an economy faces at a certain time. As GDP is composed of the performances of actors in the economy, the equation is used to pinpoint a certain sector which is not performing efficiently. For example, a decrease in GDP is observed in a certain year. The cause of the contraction of the GDP can be traced in the equation by looking at the values recorded by different players.à Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226143132300875201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681004815550436496.post-51157904399801952082020-01-25T14:56:00.001-08:002020-01-25T14:56:04.607-08:00Imam Ghazalis Philosophy Of EducationImam Ghazalis Philosophy Of Education Man has been created as a vicegerent of GOD in the world. And in order to enable him to fulfill his trust-that is to reform the earth and establish a just socio-moral order in this world. GOD has endowed him with two types of Knowledge:(1)Acquisitional Knowledge, and (2)Revelational Knowledge. The potentials for acquisitional knowledge i-e eyes, ears, head and heart have been laid into human constitution. By virtue of these potentialities, man is capable of generating conceptual and creative knowledge, something which is an exclusive characteristic of human beings. This form of knowledge can help man in the conquest of nature. While revelational knowledge consists of the guidance of God. Revelational knowledge gives man the basic wisdom and values that may help him in conquest of his own animal nature. Islam insists that both these forms of knowledge are central to human existence. From this context, it is apparent, that the role objective of own system of education ought to be to prepare our succeeding generations for the successful fulfillments of that duties of vicegerency in this world. Given this background, the importance of knowledge and education in Islam cannot be over-emphasized; hence my interest in this field. In this dissertation, my main focus is on Imam Ghazali,s philosophy of education, In order to assess the value of Imam Ghazali,s philosophy of education, It seems imperative to examine in brief the Quranic guideline for the attainment of knowledge and education. This will serve as our criterion in the light of which we will evaluate Imam Ghazali,s philosophy of education. Of course, the ultimate objective of this whole exercise is to see as to how far we can draw any guidance from these sources in the process of the reconstruction of our own system of education .It may be recalled that there is an internal and external pressure on our state and society to secularise our system of education .One of the central themes of our thesis would be to assess as to what type of education would suit our national needs ; that is how far we can depart from our socio-cultural norms and values Islam is an Arabic word which literally means obedience and peace. ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root SALEMA: peace, purity, submission and obedience. So Islam means total submission to God. According to Oxford English Dictionary Islam is the religion of the Muslims, a monotheistic faith regarded as revealed through Muhammad as the prophet of Allah. Knowledge (ilm) occupies a significant position within Islam. The first word of the first revelation of the Quran was Iqra READ! Seek knowledge! Educate yourselves! Be educated. Iqra also implies teach others, educate them (and transform them). Islam is the religion of knowledge. Islam and education are inter connected. The importance of education has been described at many places in the Holy Quran. The first aayah of the Quran is about education Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not [al-Alaq 96:1-5] Man is the superior creature of God because He has given him the high capability of understanding. He provided them the tools to understand the knowledge And Allà ¢h has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allà ¢h) [al-Nahl 16:78] Knowledge is so much important in Islam that Allah (SWT) commanded The prophet Muhammad to seek more of it. Allah says: and say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge [Ta-Ha 20:114] Knowledge is the great gift of Allah to the human beings The Holy Quran says: Whoever is given wisdom and knowledge is blessed with bounties in good abundance. (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:272) The Holy Quran says: Those who are belivers among you and the learned, God will increase their rank.. (Surah al-Mujadilah, 58:11) The prophet (pbuh) has stressed upon the significance of knowledge and its importance in the life of the human beings Learned are the heirs of the prophets He said: Whatever is in the heaven and the earth, seeks forgiveness for the learned If a man seeks the path of acquiring knowledge, God guides him to a path leading to paradise Imam Ghazalis Philosophy of Education Al-Ghazali is one of the greatest Islamic Jurists, theologians and a mystic .Imam Al Ghazali has a unique position in the history of muslim religious and philosophical thought. His contribution in the field of knowledge is very substantial .He is one of the most influential scholar in the history of Islam. He has been acclaimed as the Proof of Islam (hujjat al-Islam), the Ornament of Faith (zain al-din) and the Renewer of Religion (mujaddid). The main theme of the educational philosophy of the Imam Ghazali is the concept of God and God with the world and the mankind .The true knowledge according to imam Ghazali is the Knowledge of God. The true learned man is one who comes close to ones creator and who is busy in seeking the happiness of God. According to Imam Ghazali knowledge is to gain happiness in the hereafter and nearness to God. Knowledge is the root of good fortune in this world and in the next. The result of knowledge is to enjoy nearness of God, to keep company with the angels and the pious divines which are objects of the next world and its result in this world is honour, influence over ruler and the people. Ghazali called it the happiness of the next world: Knowledge is precious for its own sake, because with its help the happiness of the next word and Divine vision can be gained. Kinds of Knowledge Imam Ghazali identifies the difference between the revealed and the acquisitional knowledge: Knowledge is of two kinds knowledge of practical religion and knowledge of spiritual matters Imam Ghazali categorises the learning about the duties: Those which are connected to the religion .The religious learning are those which come from the Holy prophet and an absolute compliance from man is expected . Those which are not so connected to the religion, these are mathematics, medicine etc. The first one is called Farz-e-Ain and the other is called Farz-e-kafaya or binding. Imam Ghazali classifies the sciences into three categories: Praise worthy Sciences: The sciences which are beneficial up to the end is the science of knowing God, His attributes and His works, His laws effecting this world and the hereafter. This is the science which is sought for its own attributes and by which the blessing of the hereafter is gained. Blame worthy Sciences: The learning which are blame worthy are sorcery, talismanic sciences, juggling, gambling and the like Permissible Knowledge: The learning which are permissible are poetry, History, geography, biology etc. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The underling purpose of this study is to analyze the role of Imam Ghazli and his philosophy of education for the awakening of the Muslims to realize the importance of the true knowledge and its significance in the life of human beings. The study will also show as to how far Imam Ghazali develops his philosophy of education in consonance with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the prophet. Attempt will also be made to assess as to how far this philosophy can help to improve our present day system of education. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To make the students realize the true meaning of knowledge. To make the students aware about the main purpose behind acquiring Knowledge in the light of Quranic guidance. To assess the aims and objectives of Imam Ghazalis Philosophy of education. To know and understand his philosophy in the Islamic perspective. To make the students and teachers realize that Islamic education along with the modern education can lead us to improve childs social moral and ethical development. To change our present day education system which may accommodate modern developments in knowledge along with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet. Our main thrust ought to be: Be a scientist; but in the midst of all your sciences be still a man. In fact, in Islam there is no tension between science and religion. Science, for instance, tries to understand nature that surrounds us, and it is expected that man will Find God in and through his study of nature a great manifestation of God. Religion, on the other hand, is a moral and spiritual guidance of God to man with the help of which he can engage himself in the conquest of his own nature. In the ultimate run, all knowledge is supposed to marry us to God and through God we are supposed to know and understand other things that are HIS creations. So there is no tension between science and religion. Science helps us in the conquest of human nature while religion helps us in the conquest of human nature. METHODOLOGY Since the research study is exploratory so the data will be collected from secondary sources. For this purpose the main focus will be to study the original text. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF THE HOLY QURAN by Dr.Mahar Abdul Haq will guide us about The Quran and the Islamic traditions (sunnah) emphasis on knowledge. Imam Ghazalis IHYA ULUM-ID-DIN will help us to know about Imam Ghazalis educational contribution. Different books will be selected about Imam Ghazali and his Educational philosophy and data will be collected mostly from these. The purpose of this would be to extract his philosophy of education from these books/works Attempt will be made to see as to whether or not we can draw any guideline for the improvement of our current system of education. OUTLINE OF THE STUDY The research thesis will be organized into five chapters which are briefly given below. Chapter 1: Chapter one will deal with the introduction of the research thesis, and will highlight its background and significance. Chapter 2: This chapter will offer a review of related Literature. Literature about the Quranic guidance towards education will be emphisized,In the light of which we will evaluate Imam Ghazalis contributions Chapter 3: Chapter Three would highlight the methodology of this study. Chapter 4: Here an attempt will be made to highlight the significance of knowledge in the light of Quran. Chapter 5: This chapter will cover Imam Ghazalis work as an educationist. Chapter 6: An attempt will be made to assess the Quranic guidance for knowledge and Imam Ghazalis philosophy of education. Finally we would also examine its relevance to our own time and its application to the contemporary issues. BIBIOGRAPHY Saiydain, K.G.(1942) Iqbals Educational Philosophy,Lahore. Vampiros. Vampires. The word sounded wrong, no matter what language it was in. Coyotes. That was a word that made sense. After all, a coyote was just like a wolf, a wild animal drawn to the confusing tangle of the deep Virginia woods. If Rosalyn was killed by a coyote, it would be tragic, but understandable. But for Rosalyn to be killed by a demon? I laughed, the sound coming out like a short bark as I strode into my bedroom and sat with my head in my hands. My headache had returned with renewed vigor, and I remembered Emily's request that I not eat Cordelia's cooking. On top of everything else, it seemed the servants were turning on each other. Suddenly, I heard three soft raps on the door. The sound was so slight it might be the wind, which had shown no sign of stopping since we got back from the woods. ââ¬Å"Hello?â⬠I called hesitantly. The raps started again, more insistently this time. On the other side of the room, the cotton curtains blew violently in the wind. ââ¬Å"Alfred?â⬠I called, the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Father's tale had definitely affected me. ââ¬Å"I won't be needing dinner,â⬠I called affected me. ââ¬Å"I won't be needing dinner,â⬠I called loudly. I grabbed a letter opener from my desk and held it behind my back as I headed cautiously toward the door. But just as I placed my hand on the doorknob, the door began to swing inward. ââ¬Å"This isn't funny!â⬠I called, half hysterical, when all of a sudden, a figure in pale blue slipped into the room. Katherine. ââ¬Å"Good, because humor has never been one of my strong points,â⬠Katherine said, her smile revealing her straight, white teeth. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry.â⬠I blushed and hastily dropped the letter opener onto the desk. ââ¬Å"I'm just â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Y ou're still recovering.â⬠Katherine's brown eyes locked with my own. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry to startle you.â⬠She sat down on the center of my bed, pulling her knees up to her chest. ââ¬Å"Y our brother's worried about you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh â⬠¦,â⬠I stammered. I couldn't believe that Katherine Pierce had come into my bedroom and was sitting on my bed, as if it were perfectly normal. No woman, except my mother and Cordelia, had ever been in my sleeping chambers. I was suddenly embarrassed by my muddy boots in one corner, the pile of china dishes in another, and the Shakespeare volume still open on the desk. ââ¬Å"Do you want to know a secret?â⬠Katherine asked. I stood at the door, clutching the brass doorknob. ââ¬Å"Maybe?â⬠I asked hesitantly. ââ¬Å"Come closer and I'll tell you.â⬠She beckoned me with her finger. Townspeople were scandalized if a couple went walking to the Wickery Bridge without a chaperone. But here Katherine was without a chaperoneââ¬âor stockings, for that matter ââ¬âperched on my bed, asking me to join her there. There was no way I could resist that. I gingerly sat on the edge of the bed. Immediately she flipped onto her hands and knees and crawled over to me. Pushing her hair over one shoulder, she cupped my ear with her hand. ââ¬Å"My secret is that I've been worried about you, too,â⬠she whispered. Her breath was unnaturally cold against my cheek. My leg muscles twitched. I knew I should demand that she leave, right away. But instead I inched closer to her. ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠I whispered. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Katherine murmured, looking deep into my eyes. ââ¬Å"Y need to forget Rosalyn.â⬠ou I shivered and glanced away from Katherine's dark-brown eyes toward the window, watching a fast-moving summer storm sweep in. Katherine took my chin in her ice-cold hands and turned my eyes back to hers. ââ¬Å"Rosalyn is dead,â⬠she continued, her face full of sorrow and kindness. ââ¬Å"But you aren't. Rosalyn wouldn't have wanted you to shut yourself away like a criminal. No one would want that for their betrothed, don't you agree?â⬠I nodded slowly. Even though Damon had told me the same thing, the words made infinitely more sense when coming from Katherine's mouth. Her lips curved in a small smile. ââ¬Å"Y ou'll find happiness again,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"I want to help you. But you have to let me, sweet Stefan.â⬠Katherine laid her hand against my forehead. I felt a surge of heat and ice converging at my temple. I flinched from the force of it, disappointment welling in my chest as Katherine's hand dropped back into her lap. ââ¬Å"Are those the flowers I picked for you?â⬠Katherine asked suddenly, looking across the room. ââ¬Å"Y ou've shoved them into the corner without any light!â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm sorry,â⬠I said. She imperiously swung her legs off the bed and bent to take the basket from under my desk. She drew the shades, then stared at me, her arms crossed over her chest. My breath caught in my throat. Her light-blue crepe dress highlighted her tiny waist, and her necklace lay at the hollow of her neck. She was undeniably beautiful. She plucked a daisy from the bunch, removing the petals one by one. ââ¬Å"Y esterday I saw a servant child play a silly gameââ¬âhe loves me, he loves me not.â⬠She laughed, but then her smile abruptly turned solemn. ââ¬Å"What do you think the answer would be?â⬠And suddenly, she stood above me, her hands on my shoulders. I inhaled her scent of ginger and lemon, unsure what to say, knowing only that I wanted to feel her hands on my shoulders forever. ââ¬Å"Would the answer be he loves me â⬠¦ or he loves me not?â⬠Katherine asked, leaning toward me. My body began quivering with a desire I didn't know I possessed. My lips were mere inches away from hers. ââ¬Å"What's the answer?â⬠Katherine asked, biting her lip in the impression of a shy maiden. I laughed despite myself. I felt as if I were watching the scene unfold, powerless to stop what I was about to do. I knew this was wrong. Sinful. But how could it be sinful if every fiber of my being wanted it more than anything? Rosalyn was dead. Katherine was alive. And I was alive, too, and I needed to start acting like it. If what Father said was true, and I was about to fight the battle of my life between good and evil, then I needed to learn to have confidence in myself and my choices. I needed to stop thinking and start believing in myself, in my convictions, in my desires. ââ¬Å"Do you really need me to answer?â⬠I asked, reaching for her waist. I grabbed her and pulled her onto the bed with a strength I didn't know I her onto the bed with a strength I didn't know I possessed. She shrieked in delight and tumbled onto the bed next to me. Her breath was sweet, and her hands were cold and holding mine, and suddenly, nothing elseââ¬ânot Rosalyn, not my father's demons, not even Damonââ¬âmattered. The nurse-physician conflict experienced arose during a routine cold chain inspection at a family health teamââ¬â¢s office. The doctor within the establishment is provided with publicly funded vaccine, from the public health unit, which has been exposed to multiple cold chain excursions. In the novel the central character, Huck, realizes the wrongs of racisms, even though he was brought up with strong racistsââ¬â¢ values. He meets a fellow slave named, Jim, who opened his eyes and change his views on racism. As Huck and Jim journey together, the portrayal of Jim changes because Huck matures and grows. Jim becomes the friend, guide, and father-figure that Huck has lacked. Mark Twainââ¬â¢s focus on slavery in the Antebellum period of his novel while living in a post-Civil War society exposes the inherent racism that is still staining America and Twainââ¬â¢s main purposes in producing this was his wish to bring attention to some of societies cruel, suppress, and uncivilized believes. Twainââ¬â¢s Huck is uneducated and the early part of the novel involves a struggle over whether or not he should be formally educated because he believes that sometimes civilized society does things that are uncivilized, for example, slavery. The novel starts with Window Douglas and Judge Thatcher, who dictates that Huck must go to school and get educated. However, despite much effort and funding dedicating to wide literacy development, even now in America for instance, 50% of adults cannot read a book written at an eighth grade level (National Center for Learning Disabilities). Researchers in the education field have reached a consensus that reading is crucial in childhood by revealing supporting evidence from studies focused on children aged 0-6 years, 6-12, and young adolescents. This issue known as environmental injustice suggests that ethnic minorities and the poor communities are targets for toxic industries. The consistent lack of governmental representation and lack of political clout caused these targeted communities to take leadership in the environmental justice movement through grassroots organizations. We will write a custom essay sample on Environmental Justice or any similar topic only for you Order Now During the rise of environmental justice movements, there was a market revolution. Technological advancements, such as portable phones, faster cable, laptops, etc. , were becoming more accessible to the public. These new resources of communication encouraged market forces to advertise and promote their products and/or services more expansively. This growing capacity for advertisement in the United States led to habits of overconsumption in American society. Soon the ââ¬Å"nation of opportunityâ⬠became infamously known as ââ¬Å"the nation of gluttony. This perception created animosity in the United States, and anti-consumption sentiments spread. Market rebellion soon followed. Mainstream forms of consumer resistance are continuing to develop, however the foundation of consumer resistance lies in the minority communities of the United States. The simultaneous emergence of both the environmental justice movement and consumer resistance is no coincidence. Both movements have similar traits; they share the same actors, purpose, and resistance tactics. In my analysis I will demonstrate the leading forces in both movements, which consist of ethnic minorities and low-income level communities. I will then address the shared purposes of both movements. I will examine the similar incentives in participating in these movements, as well as the psychological/social concepts of voluntarism and civic participation. The final correlative factor that I identify between the environmental justice movement and consumer resistance is the tactics of resistance, such as, grassroots protests, boycotting, and product purchasing commitments. This analysis will determine that consumer resistance is a function of the environmental justice movement. Actors Women and ethnic minorities, such as, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans, are the dominant leaders and actors in the environmental justice movement and in consumer resistance. Mexican Americans and Native Americans have deep knowledge of ecology and respect for natural resources that originate in the moral foundations of their cultures and identities. African Americans and Women share the resentment of industries to target them and construct them in terms of their roles in society. These sentiments are addressed in their acts of consumer resistance and environmental justice movements. The importance in sustaining the environment and natural resources is apparent in Native Americanââ¬â¢s traditional ecological knowledge. The significance of nature in Native American culture is shown in their spiritual beliefs and pagan religion. Many tribes idolized animals by emulating them through warrior garments, physical markings, tribal chants, and dances. They also relied on plant life in their medicinal practices. N.Scott Momaday of the Kiowa Tribe summates the ethics of Native American tribes by stating, ââ¬Å"We humans must come again to a moral comprehension of the earth and air. We must live according to the principle of a land ethic. The alternative is that we shall not live at allâ⬠(Churchill 1983, 47). Native Americans are ideal leaders in environmental justice movements and consumer resistance due to their strong views of sustainable resource management and their personal conflicts over land ownership and property rights. Native American communities are arguably the most susceptible to having their land taken by corporations or industries. In terms of agricultural practices, the Native Americans, especially those tribes residing in California, have sustainably managed the agricultural cultivation without relying on machines or pesticides (Churchill 1983). Mexican Americans have a deep respect for the environment and have a deep awareness of how to use natural resources sustainably. This knowledge is important to the survival of the culture and community, and reflects their Chicano identities. Sister Teresa Jaramillo, another San Luis native, describes a local sense of place that weaves her body and spirituality into the land, La Sierra. I know the names of the creeks and lakes and ponds with beautiful fish. I know the names of the hills where trees can be foundâ⬠¦They are my spiritual brothers and sisters, my teachers. I know the place where the animal trails take you and the beaver ponds, and the places where my uncle took sheep to graze. I know La Sierra because she is my homeâ⬠(Pena 2005, xxv-xxvi). The Mexican American people have an intimate relationship with the wilderness, which makes them appropriate actors in issues of resource exploitation. ââ¬Å"In the land grant communities at the time of Pinchot and Muir, wilderness was inhabited; it was home.It was not a mere commodity. Nature was inseparable from civilization. Their material culture is based on this sustainable relationship to wild spaces. The wilderness is woven into peopleââ¬â¢s identitiesâ⬠(Pena 2005, 31). When the common lands of and water rights of his ancestral land were taken and destroyed, Adelmo Kaber felt susto, a fright so intense it may result in the loss of soul. Mexican Americans are severely affected by environmental threats in terms of their well-being because of the significance of natural resources in framing their cultural identities and morals (Pena 2005).African Americans have been prominent leaders in combating industries through environmental justice movements and consumer resistance. Industrial forces have performed acts of environmental racism that directly affect the health and labor rights of those targeted black communities. These acts have been successful in the formation of groups meant to hinder the progress of services and industries that have destroyed the health, the environment, and the civil rights of black communities. Women have also been prominent leaders in combating industries through environmental justice movements and consumer resistance.A unive rsity study shows that women think of ââ¬Å"big business as a deterrent to positive change in the area of the environmentâ⬠and it also showed that women defined themselves in opposition to the dominant consumer cultureâ⬠because of ââ¬Å"their idea that consumption did not provide solutions to environmental problemsâ⬠(Fournier 1998, 2). During the 1980ââ¬â¢s, women broke out of their former social constructs of the 1950s by entering the workforce and abandoning their roles as being solely the housewives. This created womenââ¬â¢s growing resentment for household and childcare products being targeted at just a female audience. The rising influence of women in leading environmental justice movements and consumer resistance is due to the growing influence of Ecofeminism. This new sector of environmental justice ââ¬Å"is based on the idea that domination and exploitation of women and of the environment are interconnected. â⬠(132) Ecofeminists identify the problem as being ââ¬Å"the capitalist system of economic exploitation and its control of science and technologyâ⬠(Pena 2005, 133). The growing credibility of this approach provides another portal for women to combat industries through environmental justice movements and consumer resistance. PurposeThe environmental justice movements and consumer resi stance share the same purpose in terms of hindering industries that are detrimental to the environments they target. Both movements have a cause-and-effect relationship. Collectively changing consumption patterns reduces exploitation of resources and environmental degradation. Reversely, advocating for more environmentally benign production practices in toxic facilities creates eco-friendly products and services. This relationship is reflected in the shared incentives and the psychological implications of the environmental justice movements and consumer resistance. Many notable environmental organizations, such as Greenpeace, Co-Op America, and Earth First, address both issues of environmental justice and overconsumption in order to improve their credibility in the realm of environmentalism. In current environmental issues, Greenpeace ââ¬Å"opposes the release of GMOs into the environmentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"advocates immediate interim measures such as the labeling of GE foods and the segregation of genetically engineered crops and seeds to prevent them contaminating conventional and organic produce â⬠(Greenpeace). This demonstrates how Greenpeace merges consumer resistance and environmental justice by altering the content of GE food labels, which would reduce consumption of GE food, as well as improve human health and the environment. It is apparent that the intentions of consumer resistance includes the intentions of environmental justice movements because anti-consumption depends on a sense of identity grounded in social positions, such as, pro environmentalism, empowerment, and a vision of society that involved eco-friendly market behavior and structure. Anti-brand movements merge concerns of consumer resistance and environmental justice. Issues prominent in the anti-brand movement range from workplace equality and corporate domination to environmentalism and marketing propagandaâ⬠(Hollenbeck 2006, 1). These sentiments are reflected in the Fair Trade Coffee campaign of the Global Exchange Organization. The Fair Trade Coffee campaign ââ¬Å"assures consumers that the coffee we drink was purchased under fair conditions. To become Fair Trade certified, an importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price per pound of $1. 26, providing much needed credit to farmers, and providing te chnical assistance such as help transitioning to organic farming. Fair Trade for coffee farmers means community development, health, education, and environmental stewardshipâ⬠(Fair Trade Coffee 2009). It is apparent that achieving environmental justice and consumer resistance simultaneously is easily attainable. Many social and psychological concepts draw connections among the purposes of both movements. The notion of voluntary simplicity, which is ââ¬Å"the idea that personal satisfaction, fulfillment, and happiness result from a commitment to nonmaterial aspects of life,â⬠can be applied to the purpose of consumer resistance and environmental justice movements (Zavestoski 2009, 154). This belief is put into practice by minimizing consumption of material goods, exercising self-reliance, and improving oneââ¬â¢s intellectâ⬠(Zavestoski 2009, 155). Both movements exercise this theory in their counteractions against corrupt industrial forces by educating their communities about environmental injustices and the negative effects of o verconsumption, as well as belittling the credibility of those industries by protesting, boycotting, or make purchase commitments. Another common purpose of environmental justice movements and consumer resistance is to terminate the exploitation of natural resources. Our societyââ¬â¢s unhealthy dependence on resources is shown through one of Marxistââ¬â¢s meanings of alienation: Due to the fact that who we are is defined by what we produce; when we are separated from what we produced, we are alienated from ourselves. In a system in which forms of production cut the laborer off from what she or he produces, as in capitalism, the laborer can no longer create his identity through production (Zavestoski 2009, 157). This implies that corrupt industrial forces are detrimental to self identity and independence.Mexican Americans and Native Americans share this sentiment of blaming industry and resource exploitation for threatening the integrity of their identities and moral beliefs of environmentalism. Marx also identifies two contradictions of capitalism. The first contradiction is the tendency for the profit rates to decline while capital expands globally. This leads to overproduction because ââ¬Å"each individual capitalist seeks to lower costs in order to maintain profitability by out-producing his or her competitorsâ⬠(Pena 2005, 134). The unintended effect is the reduction of total market demand for commodities. Both movements adopt this theory because it implies that industrial overproduction and labor/consumer demand are to blame for the exploitation of resources (Pena 2005). The second contradiction is characterized as a problem of underproduction. ââ¬Å"Individual capitalists lower costs by externalizing costs to labor or nature,â⬠but ââ¬Å"the unintended effect of this is to raise costs on other capitalsâ⬠¦and lower profitsâ⬠(Pena 2005, 134). This contradiction is the main concept in Ecosocialism, which declares that ââ¬Å"the economic system destroys the natural conditions of production and provokes an ecological crisisâ⬠(Pena 2005, 134).This theory draws the connection between consumer resistance and environmental justice movements because it blames corrupt industrial forces for creating environmental threats and exploited resources. Tactics Environmental justice movements and acts of consumer resistance share the same tactic of boycotting as well as forming or joining grassroots organizations. Native Americans have used boycotting to combat industries that claimed the land in which they resided in. The Navajo community boycotted the uranium mining in Churchrock, New Mexico. The miners significantly reduced the limited water supply, and also contaminated what was left of the Navajo water supply with uranium. Kerr-McGee and United Nuclear Corporation, the two mining companies held responsible, argued that the Federal Water Pollution Control Act did not apply to them. The boycotts did achieve legal attention, but the courts did not force the companies to comply with US clean water regulations until 1980 (Shaiman 1998). The Native Americans referred to boycotting to avert consumption of certain products. The Native American boycotts regarding Crazy Horse Malt Liquor began when the Hornell Brewing Co. introduced Crazy Horse Malt Liquor in a distasteful and insulting manner. The introduction ââ¬Å"demeans the name of revered Oglala Lakota Leader Tashunke Witco [Crazy Horse]â⬠(Friedman 1999, 139). This statement reflects the feelings of the American Indian Movement (AIM) as well as two other organizations (the Wisconsin Greens and Honor, Inc. ) that performed boycotts the two associated brewers. The boycott gained Native American constituencies in Congress. However, the beverage is still sold in some 40 states (Friedman 1999).Historically, Mexican American led environmental justice movements using strikes as their main tactic. The Cananea Strike of 1906 was documented as the first successful strike in terms of ending environmentally hazardous working conditions. The Cananea Mine in Sonora, Arizona was notorious causing fatalities among workers, who died in the explosions or from asphyxiation due to the buildup of toxic gases. On November 19th, 1906, Mexican workers went on strike against the owner, Anaconda Copper Company, a multinational corporation based in the United States. This strike was one of the first involving demands to improve workplace environmental conditions. Following that strike, Mexican Americans were excluded from the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and thus were forced to form their own unions. The environmental injustices of this occupational segregation led to numerous conflicts and strikes over the course of the 20th century (Pena 2005, 101). Mexican American tactics for environmental justice movements involve forming grassroots projects and organizations to boycott and campaign for better living conditions. The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) was a collective response by Mexican Americans in Albuquerque to an urban environment containing patterns of discrimination and police brutality. The toxic brownfields, polluting industries, and deteriorating housing degrade urban neighborhoods (Pena 2005, 168). Mexican-origin urban residents participate in movements for amenities, such as, better housing, community-based health care, and local food security by boycotting corrupt businesses that surround the community. Mexican Americans have utilized boycotting in their consumer resistance efforts. The organization responsible for the boycott was Justicia, one of several Mexican American groups active in media reform efforts in the late 1960s and early 1970s This group successfully dropped the advertisement of ââ¬Å"Frito Banditoâ⬠by the Frito-Lay Company from its Fritos Corn Chips commercials. Another success was the purging from prime time of ââ¬Å"Jose Jimenez,â⬠the Hispanic cha racter created by comedian Bill Dana (Friedman 1999, 157). African Americans utilize boycotting in their actions of consumer resistance. The Street Car boycotts of the early 1990s occurred in response to Jim Crow streetcar laws.Every one of the boycotts failed to reverse the legal tide of segregation in the South. As the only protest mechanism realistically available to African Americans, however, the boycott tactic continued to be embraced even though failure was inevitable. In the 1950s, the bus boycotts of Montgomery and Tallahassee regarding segregated seating proved to be effective. The bus boycotts put the buses out of business in the black community. When the Supreme Court ruled against bus segregation in Montgomery, blacks in Tallahassee resumed riding buses, with desegregated seating (Friedman 1999).Many black communities also used boycotting as a mechanism to combat the environmental injustices of landfills in the last 50 years. In 1967, black students of Houston boycotted the city garbage dump in their community that had claimed the lives of two children. In 1968, residents of West Harlem, in New York City, fought unsuccessfully against the sewage treatment plant in their community. In 1982, the black community of Warren County boycotted the newly constructed hazardous waste landfill in the small town of Afton. State officials disregarded concerns over toxic chemicals leaching into drinking water supplies. This forced the community to confront the dumping trucks. Lying down on roads leading into the landfill, the community stopped the dumping. After six weeks of marches and nonviolent street protests, more than 500 people were arrested. The boycotting was ineffective and the toxic waste was eventually deposited in that landfill. However the boycotts of Warren County did receive national attention and gave the environmental justice movement mainstream acclamation (Bullard 1990). Consumer resistance and environmental justice movements have contributed to female empowerment in American politics.Women are the leading actors in the current anti-consumption and environmental movements. New studies of Ecofeminism and the evolution of womenââ¬â¢s rights contribute to the progress in womenââ¬â¢s role in society. This changes the social construct of women and displays the shift in female roles of American society. Ethnic minorities are also empowered as a result of these popular movements. Grassroots organizations led by minorities are gaining notoriety and credibility in the domestic policies of U. S. politics. These movements have also contributed to the modernization of resistance tactics. The Internet has made these movements more global in scale. Resources for grassroots organizations are more accessible, and there are more opportunities to gain political clout among impoverished communities. For the benefit of future generations, these positive shifts in the roles of previously undermined social groups will hopefully raise the relevance of consumer resistance and environmental justice movements in the legislative and judicial branches of government in order to create effective and permanent change. Thesoft drink market is a relatively mature market with annual growth of 4-5%causing intense rivalry among brands for market share and growth (Crouch, Steve). This paper will explore Porters Five Forces to determine whether or not thisis an attractive industry and what barriers to entry (if any) exist. Inaddition, we will discuss several critical success factors and the future of theindustry. SegmentsThe soft drink industry has two major segments, the flavor segment andthe distribution segment. The flavor segment is divided into 6 categories andis listed in table 1 by market share. The distribution segment is divided in to7 segments: Supermarkets 31.9%, fountain operators 26.8%, vending machines11.5%, convenience stores 11.4%, delis and drug stores 7.9%, club stores 7.3%,and restaurants 3.2%. Financial information hasnot yet been made available for 1996. 2. The majority of the information targetsthe end consumer and not the sales volume from the major soft drink producers tolocal distributors. 3. There was no data available to determine over capacity. Socio-EconomicRelevant Governmental or Environmental Factors, etc. The Federal Government regulates the soft drink industry, like any industrywhere the public ingests the products. The regulations vary from ensuring clean, safe products to regulating what those products can contain. For example, thegovernment has only approved four sweeteners that can be used in the making of asoft drink (Crouch, Steve). The soft drink industry currently has had verylittle impact on the environment. One environmental issue of concern is thatthe use of plastics adversely affects the environment due to the unusually longtime it takes for it to degrade. To combat this, the major competitors havelead in the recycling effort which starting with aluminum and now plastics. Theonly other adverse environmental impact is the plastic straps that hold the canstogether in 6-packs. These straps have been blamed for the deaths of fish andmammals in both fresh and salt water. Economic Indicators Relevant for this IndustryThe general growth of the economy has had a slight positive influence on thegrowth of the industry. The general growth in volume for the industry, 4-5percent, has been barely keeping up with inflation and growths on margins havebeen even less, only 2-3 percent (Crouch, Steve). .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .postImageUrl , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:hover , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:visited , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:active { border:0!important; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:active , .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0 .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue6ae7ef78e7affb7e78f548d2016c4c0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Reclaiming Clean Energy from Wastewater EssayThreat of New EntrantsEconomies of ScaleSize is a crucial factor in reducing operating expenses and being able to makestrategic capital outlays. It was originally called ââ¬Å"Dayton Dry Goods Companyâ⬠and then later became Dayton Company in 1910. By 1962, Dayton Company opened its first discount store in Roseville, Minnesota by the name of ââ¬Å"Targetâ⬠. By 2000, all Dayton Hudson Corporations changed their name to Target Corporation. It opened three operating divisions including Target, Mervynââ¬â¢s and the Department Store Division. In 2001, Targetââ¬â¢s division generated about 80 percent of retail sales and operating income while Mervynââ¬â¢s generated only 12 percent and the Department Store Division only generated 9% of sales therefore Target merged their e-commerce team and direct merchandising unit into one organization creating Target Corporation opening 74 new stores within the same year. Targetââ¬â¢s operating strategy is built on providing great value to their consumers. They distinguish themselves from the competition by differentiating their inventory from other competing retail stores such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart. We will write a custom essay sample on Target Corporation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page They are also known as being environmentally responsible. Targetââ¬â¢s Corporation Associated Merchandising Corp. is a global sourcing organization that is involved with other souring companies to source goods to other parent companies. Target has developed a very unique store personality since its inception to ensure that it is core targeted market is reached. Targets store image is designed to reach its ââ¬Å"targetâ⬠market that is understood to be a step above its competitors of Wal-Mart and Kmart. The typical target customer is 44 years old with an average household income of $54,000 per year with 80% being female and over half being college graduates. Target reaches this core market through a strategic and well analyzed store development and retail site selection process. The Target real estate department identifies potential markets for new stores through an extensive search of analyzing population growth, existing stores performance, competition, demographics, and market potential. Target actively seeks the local communities input to ensure new stores are sensitive to local market needs and concerns. Once these market conditions have been met and local communities are on board Target will then construct one of the two possible Target prototype stores, The General Merchandise Store or The super Target. Target strives to open the stores at precise times being either March, July, or October as to ensure maximum exposure as construction on new stores ranges 9-12 months and store openings are planned well beyond 12 months in the future. The General Merchandise Store maintains a mixture of everyday needs including, electronics, household products, limited assortment of non-perishable and perishable food in addition to seasonal items. These stores on average employ 150-250 persons with a planned square footage of 128,000 square feet. The Super Target as the name implies is designed and constructed on a larger and grander scale and is located in large population areas with upscale demographics. The typical Super Target Store provides all the offerings of The General Merchandise Store with the added accompaniments of a full grocery store including fresh organic produce, deli, and bakery. These stores employ on average 200-300 persons and are constructed to be between 180,000 and 190,000 square feet. Target will locate these stores in suburban and urban markets with the urban market stores being single level raised elevation stores. In addition to these new store designs and openings Target breeds its store image and personality in several other ways to maintain its strong and affluent customer base. These objectives are also reached through store remodels, rebuilds, relocations, and in some cases store closings to preserve the brand name. Target is committed to its loyal customers and extensively reinvests in older store remodels to maintain the expected ââ¬Å"store imageâ⬠Target customersââ¬â¢ desire. Target Real Estate department analyses store sales volume, age of store, new store opportunities, and times since last update when considering a store for its remodel program. In some instances Target will do a complete rebuild of a store when factors allow. Target on average owns 85% of its buildings and land which enables Target in some situations to rebuild the store on the same site while the existing store remains in operation. In all of these situations Target will always to a simultaneous opening in conjunction with a store closing, the older store will close that fternoon with the new/remodeled store opening in the morning. This seamless transition ensures there are not any lapses in employeeââ¬â¢s employment as well as customerââ¬â¢s ability to shop. With all of the in-depth site analysis, store analysis, demographic study, traffic count consideration, and local community reach-out that is placed in every new Target store selection, remodel, rebuild or store closing it is very easy to understand how Target has developed a ââ¬Å"cultâ⬠like following based somewhat solely on its store image and personality. When a Target store, the bricks and mortar, and contrasted with its counterparts Wal-Mart and Kmart the Target hope is there is simply no comparison. In order to establish a business, Target Corp. had to first start with their marketing mix which includes their products, prices, place, and promotion also known as the four Pââ¬â¢s. Their products and services consists of a wide variety including womenââ¬â¢s, menââ¬â¢s and childrenââ¬â¢s fashion, baby equipment, home accessories, furniture, electronics, toys, fitness equipment, bath and bedding, baby and wedding registry, photo, pharmacy, optical and much more. They offer discount prices and clearance items in order to help consumerââ¬â¢s wallets while still offering quality products. (ââ¬Å"Expect More, Pay Lessâ⬠) Target Corp. has 26 regional distribution centers, 5 import warehouses and stores located in 47 states. They ship all their items directly to consumers from the Target. com Distribution Center. Their promotion strategies consists of newspapers, television commercials, internet and direct mailing lists and Channel Red, an in store network. Target Corporation has a unique market segmentation that makes consumers different from one another. Target Corp. as median age of forty-six years of age which is the youngest among other retailers. They target young customers with higher incomes than their competitors. The median household income of Target consumers is $55,000 and they typically live in suburban areas. About thirty-eight percent of consumers have children at home which is also more than any another competing discount store. Eighty to ninety percent of Targetââ¬â¢s consumers are female and forty-three percent have completed college. Although Targetââ¬â¢s main consumers are women (93%), they still target men by establishing an automotive, hardware and sporting good departments. Targetââ¬â¢s positioning (or market) strategy is centered on a ââ¬Å"cheap chic strategyâ⬠. Instead of competition for the lowest price to their everyday competitors, Target wanted to build an attractive clientele and venue. They have attracted a much younger and better educated clientele therefore their consumers are known as ââ¬Å"guestsâ⬠instead of being known as your everyday ââ¬Å"customer. â⬠Because of their upscale discount prices and products and their concept of associating style and quality, Target created their cheap but chic strategy; setting them apart from competitors. In order to offer quality products, Target uses several marketing tactics in order to keep existing consumers and establish new ones. Television, newspapers, magazines, brochures and testimonials from existing consumers help Target increase their client base and differentiate them from the competition. Another strategy Target Corp. uses in order to lure in younger audiences (both new and existing and typically ages 13-21) is established by running thirty second commercials featuring current celebrities. It could be doing this either by trying to leave the Soviet sphere of influence or even moderate its policies rather than stay in the small parameters allowed to them by Russia. The Doctrine was seen clearly in the Soviet crushing of the Prague Spring movement in Czechoslovakia which caused it to be first outlined. Origins of the Brezhnev Doctrine When the forces of Stalin and the Soviet Union fought Nazi Germany west across the European continent, the Soviets did not liberate the countries, like Poland, which were in the way; they conquered them. After the war, the Soviet Union made sure these nations had states who would largely do what they were told by Russia, and the Soviets created the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance between these nations, to counter NATO. Berlin had a wall across it, other areas had no less subtle instruments of control, and the Cold War set two halves of the world against each other (there was a small non-aligned movement). However, the satellites states began to evolve as the forties, fifties and sixties passed by, with a new generation taking control, with new ideas and often less interest in the Soviet empire. Slowly, the Eastern Bloc began to go in different directions, and for a brief time it looked like these nations would assert, if not independence, then a different character. The Prague Spring Russia, crucially, did not approve of thisà and worked to stop it. The Brezhnev Doctrine is the moment Soviet policy went from verbal to outright physical threats, the moment the USSR said it would invade anyone who stepped out of its line. It came during Czechoslovakias Prague Spring, a moment when (relative) freedom was in the air, if only briefly. Brezhnev described his response in a speech outlining the Brezhnev Doctrine: ...each Communist party is responsible not only to its own people, but also to all the socialist countries, to the entire Communist movement. Whoever forgets this, in stressing only the independence of the Communist party, becomes oneà sided. He deviates from his international duty...Discharging their internationalist duty toward the fraternal peoples of Czechoslovakia and defending their own socialist gains, the U.S.S.R. and the other socialist states had to act decisively and they did act against the anti-socialist forces in Czechoslovakia. Aftermath The term was used by the Western media and not by Brezhnev or the USSR itself. The Prague Spring was neutralized, and the Eastern Bloc was under the explicit threat of Soviet attack, as opposed to the previous implicit one. As far as Cold War policies go, the Brezhnev Doctrine was entirely successful, keeping a lid on Eastern Bloc affairs until Russia gave in and ended the Cold War, at which point Eastern Europe rushed to assert itself once more. A YouTube channel? Or maybe you even run your own website? If so, strongly consider providing the URL to it, if you are comfortable doing so. Here are some things you should keep in mind before you submit a URL: When you click on the link to a website, what do you notice first? Probably the interface and how user-friendly it is. If you are maintaining your own website, it will be of utmost importance to ensure that it is accessible. If your parents were handed a laptop with your website on the front screen, would they be able to navigate it? If you donââ¬â¢t think that you can confidently answer ââ¬Ëyesââ¬â¢ to that question, it would be in your best interest to make updates to your website. For example, letââ¬â¢s say you are running a blog website on running. Instead of having all the different blogs and threads cluttered on one page, it would be helpful to organize them into several tabs or folders. For instance, categories could be Nutrition, Technique, Music, and Miscellaneous. Submit your essay and weââ¬â¢ll get back to you with helpful edits. If you maintain an account on YouTube or a blogging website, ask yourself if your content is appropriate and detailed. Would you be comfortable with your grandparents examining your online presence? Can someone who hasnââ¬â¢t met you glean aspects of your personality from your posts? For example, instead of writing ââ¬Ëyes.ââ¬â¢ as a response to a thread, you can back up your response with more detail. Write about that experience you had at the grocery store. Or maybe something interesting you learned from that Netflix show from the previous night. Of course, if you donââ¬â¢t have an online presence, that is perfectly acceptable; in fact, itââ¬â¢s why this essay prompt is optional! However, you should compensate for this with a strong Common Application essay . Make sure you detail your extracurricular activities so that admissions officers can understand how you contributed to each one, and build close relationships with your teachers so they can provide further insight into who you are as a person. My sternness had provided people with reasons to think negatively about me. Since those were my initial days in the organization, I needed to thoroughly examine the organization to understand its culture, processes and systems and the autocratic style of leadership was serving as a hindrance in me achieving these. This also deterred me from making informed decisions since I did not have much awareness of the organizational systems and as an autocratic leader, it was not suitable to seek advice of my juniors. So I decided to change my approach. I slowly transformed my autocratic style of leadership into a democratic style. It was certainly not easy. More than a change in the style of leadership, it required me to bring a revolutionary change in my personality and image that I projected before my subordinates and followers. Although it did take me some time to bring this 180 degree change in my personality and image, yet it was not impossible to achieve. I used certain strategies and key principles to improve my level of communication and enrich my interaction with my subordinates and followers. The first step I took was opening communication channels with my subordinates and followers. I regularly arranged meetings in which I communicated them my views and opinions, and heard theirs also. I also added many of my subordinates and followers to my profile on Facebook and Twitter to foster greater understanding both ways. Adding them as friends not only helped me have a greater insight into their daily activities, interests, h obbies, and social life both within and beyond the workplace, it also helped them clarify their doubts about me and understand my personality better. Slowly, I noticed a change in their attitude toward me, and for the most part, the change was Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226143132300875201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681004815550436496.post-63479271346751134082019-11-19T01:44:00.001-08:002019-11-19T01:44:05.490-08:00Personal Statament for Bsc Drama School (Acting and some applications StatementStatament for Bsc Drama School (Acting and some applications Mucical Theatre) - Personal Statement Example I had no passion in the job and so I had to quit and pursue acting. They plant the seed of ambition into his mind when they predicted all glorious titles to him. They are very influential and can predict future, due to which Macbeth bases all of his decisions on what the witches have told him. When Macbeth has his second meeting with the witches, the scene where Macbeth goes to seek the help of the witches, and as they know he is coming they prepare a potion for him to drink. The witches know what the outcome of what they said would be ecause apparently witches were not only able to predict the future but also the outcome of each decision that the characters in the play would take and how these characters would change, from noble to evil. This again shows how their role in the play is very important. When Macbeth reaches the cave the witches say, ââ¬Å" By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes,â⬠(act 4 scene 1 lines 47-48 ) This clearly shows that the witches have noticed the change in Macbeth as they refer to him as being evil. The witches lead him to think about murder, being the King and power. Their plan works and soon after in a conversation with Banquo, we see, that murder is going through Macbethââ¬â¢s mind, in soliloquy, when he mutters to himself, when Macbeth says, ââ¬Å" My thought, whose murder yet is but fantasticalâ⬠(act 1 scene 3 line 151 ) Not only do the witches spur on his want to be king but they even try to entice Banquo by telling him, ââ¬Å"Thou shalt get kings, though thou be noneâ⬠, (act 1 scene 3 line 71) meaning his heirs will be kings. Later on in the play Macbeth, when he is king, sets his mind back to this moment and makes him think that Banquo is a threat as his heirs will be Macbethââ¬â¢s successor. This idea, along with the fact that Banquo knew about the witches and Macbethââ¬â¢s thoughts on murder, leads to Macbeth wanting Banquo dead. Even though the witchesââ¬â¢ greetings affect Macbeth and lead to the murder of Duncan and Banquo, they do not actually directly tell Macbeth to commit these actions. However if the witches had not greeted Macbeth, he would not have ultimately killed Duncan. The apparitions are very much like the witches greetings. When Macbethââ¬â¢s questions are un-answered, it tell us that the witches have set the apparitions up to tell Macbeth the information which will affect later decisions, which in fact lead to his death. Macduff would not have hated Macbeth so much if Macbeth would not have killed Macduffs family. The apparition tells, Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff; (Act4 Scene1 line 83) and after the news of Macduffââ¬â¢s flight to England, Macbeth gives orders for Macduffs family to be killed. So the witches play an imperative part in the outcome once again. The witches also convinced him to continue to walk along the bloody path by advising him to be ââ¬Ëbloody, bold, and resoluteââ¬â¢ and to have ââ¬Ëno fearââ¬â¢. These predictions gave Macbeth confidence to murder more victims. They also encouraged Macbeth and enabled his conscience to murder as to fulfill the witchesââ¬â¢ prophecies. It is morally profligate to torment animals for our own benefits. These animals, who cannot defend themselves against abuse, are legally imprisoned and exploited. Every single day a human being talks about his or her rights. If they feel their rights have been taken away from them then they will fight back. It?s hypercritical for humans to torment and kill, innocent and unprotected animals if they talk about their own rights. Animals should receive the same rights as humans. Over 115 million animals have been tormented daily for scientific research. People seem to find this acceptable but if the same number of humans were to die at the same time, it actually be considered a tragedy. I would be considered immorally wrong and I would be called a psycho killer, and would be sent to jail. How come scientists can do this every day and no one thinks twice about it. These scientist wouldn?t be called a psycho killer because if they do manage to create something beneficial from the torture of these helpless animals, then they will be known as heroes. We need to put an end to this cruelty! Can a animal hold a pen or pencil if they don?t have any thumbs? I've never met an animal that can speak English or other types of languages, Its unfair to give tests to these poor animals! Everyone should put themselves in the animal?s position, living in a locked room without control over anything of your life. You can't choose when and what you will eat, how you will spend your time, or even have anyone to talk to. You can't even decide when the lights go on and off. Think about how you would feel if you spent your entire life like this, even though you haven?t committed a crime. Ev... ...d other animals, but killed 61 people and caused austere reactions. Some animal testing is not even needed but they do it anyway. There are over 500 companies that still test on animals. Cosmetic companies perform more then half of all animal tests, such as L'olay, Cover Girl, Suave, and Johnson and Johnson. I am believe that today?s technology testing products on animals is completely unnecessary. Animals do not need to be tested on for the development of new cosmetics or hair products. Animal produces imprecise and dangerous results and its just a waste of time and resources. New test are just being ignored. Animals are just like us. They feel pain and want to live just as much as we do. We are better than the other animals because we often say we are. The testing and experiments is to make our lives better, so it should be performed on us? Not other animals. Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00226143132300875201noreply@blogger.com0
